ARKDOK 2.0
The limitless
How will a museum of architecture relate to an architecture which no longer
consists primarily of concrete, wood and glass, but to no less an extent comprises
virtual environments, communication and adaptive processes?
This is a mounting question in the wake of developments during the past ten
years, a period in which the intertwining of research in genetics, nanotechnology
(miniaturisation) and computer technology has exploded into revolutionary
discoveries pointing to wholly new materials and production processes. We
are now witnessing the emergence of technologies which are totally transforming
the way in which we will communicate, interact with one another and relate
to our surroundings. Intelligence and reactivity will be built into every
corner around us, giving rise to an environment which is more fluid than permanent.
The architecture generated will have an abundant digital inner life, accessible
to us both through adaptable materials and physical interfaces and through
the virtual entrances which it conceals.
The ARKDOK 2.0 installation conveys a vision of an archive in the year 2025.
By that time, the museum archive will be directly linked to architects’
offices, buildings and construction sites by digital links. Processes, sketches,
images, animations, texts and drawings flow in real time into the museum,
where the information is sorted automatically, generally categorised, filed
and made available for distribution and display - both in the museum itself,
in its branches worldwide and directly accessible to physical and virtual
visitors.
Arkdok 2.0 is presented at the
Swedish Museum of Architecture in Stockholm until 18th July 2004.
This project is a collaboration with Igor
Isaksson - July 2004
