BEEOFF FEATURING: ...
August 2002
Site specific installation for Moderna
Museet in Stockholm
When we see moving images we expect to find narratives, contexts, a beginning
and an end. Film directors have for a little bit more than a decade improved
and developed their methods and we expect that all film will be as effective
as the movies. If you look at the development in the video art in the last
ten years or so you will notice that many artists have achieved a form that
is close to directors of films. The videos have become more narrative and
many artists works is close to documentary films, music videos and movies.
The boundaries are not as sharp as they use to be.
Of course many artists goes in other directions. For the artists group Beeoff time has become central and they work with filming in real-time and over long durations. In their piece Beeoff Featuring… a moving security camera was placed inside the hall for temporary exhibitions at the Modern Museum in Stockholm. The filming of the exhibitions and the spectators was edited in real time using an own soft ware that distorted the images to graphic and used changes in light and colours to compose music. The result war then distributed in real time to the Central Station in Stockholm where it was presented on a large screen with speakers.
Why the piece was created in real-time in reached the audience immediately after the creation. It has no directed beginning or ending, there was no story or narrative to discover. What we experienced was a never ending flow of pictures and images, an eternal now where the past and the future was of no importance.
This piece was created by the circumstances at the museum. Still it had a life of it’s own. The image nor the sound was directly linked to the motions inside the museum. There was no possibility for the spectators to use the piece for their own expressions, to stand in front the camera and create certain sounds like it was some kind of a music instrument. What happened was that Beeoff used the museum and the audience as an ingredient in their art as they used the time and the moment.
