”THE HYPERREAL SOCIETY”  by: Mikael Scherdin

“ Independent of which way time is perceived it can be said that it can meet in one singular point. The exact now. Precisely in this very moment, whether we see the world in a Buddhistic perspecteive or a christian one, they all merge in this one, very single point, called “real-time”.

The point of real, exists only now and just at this very moment, and will never return. It is absolute. It is no measurement tool, it is no perception of the world depending on religious thought or anything else. It is simply neutral and blank. It is nothing. It is just a point.

It is an ever changing, exact point, in a perfect “stand-still”.

Real Time  -  a concept of the “hyper real” ?

In my earlier texts; “jungle of time” and “the forces of flow”, I explain some of my thoughts and philosophical statements around my own art. Some of those statements and ideas are also influencing the work and the creation of other structures, such as nonTVTVstation, Beeoff - the art group and Splintermind as the studio and place for several activities in the contemporary art field. In this text, however, I will discuss the concept of “real-time” as a surpassor of the old concept of what is concidered “reality”.

In this paper I suggest that art, created in a “real-time” context, especially created in the context of the nonTVTVstation, can be considered as ”passing the point of reality”.

Let me start with a few important statements around time and space.

Time is a way of measuring, as well as weight, light and other things are measured of the SI-system. Time is simply a way of the society to have a common tool to stick to. A tool that is the same for all. A standardised time for the whole world , which was not always the case. The perception of time is however, something completely different. In the western world, we are considering time as running from point a) to point b), in a (never ending) linear way of thinking.

In many eastern societies, on the other hand, time is perceived as “circular”.

Independent of which way time is perceived it can be said that it can meet in one singular point.

The artpiece exists in every single point and re-invent itself in a never ending process of repetedly points of real-time. The real-time-art-piece becomes a flow without any concept of time.

An art piece that is generated and shown at exactly the same time as it is produced, becomes in this sence, a perfect reality. One perfect reality of an infinite numbers of realities. But still, a perfect and clear reality. A reality on it´s very own.

If such an art piece is produced and shown in a context, such as with the help of the Internet, something else occurs. Something really interesting arise. But to get to understand, my way of thinking, I have to explain further.

A single art piece could use the Internet to transmit art, that is produced in real-time. And in real-time only.

The real-time art-piece is litterarily becomes a type of internet-tv-piece in itself. The distribution of the real-time art-pice starts at the very moment it is connected to the Internet.

So, the stand alone real-time art-piece is added to the idea and format of production and distribution of it. There is a type of “network”.  A network of physical show-spots at various places around the world,  combined with a virtual show-spot/room on the Internet.

Those two contexts, one physical and one virtual, creates a joint virtual& analogue context for the actual real-time art-piece to exist within …..or … ?

Yes,  I have used the word “context” on purpose, since it can have several meanings in itself. In a sence we have created an own “art-context” for the real-time-art to act within. To act within and on its own terms. In itself, it is a perceived context, a perceived space.

So… now…. we are moving into the other dimension af the real-time-art-piece.

The first dimension was time or, in the case of the real-time-art-piece, the lack of time - or just a point. The second one is “space”.

In modern way of perception, of our reality or, the concept “time” is often combined as a “twin-concept” with it´s sister “space” -  “time-space”.

A real-time-art-piece, produced by a software-program, computer or a complex installation that is “constructing”, the actual art-flow, the flow of sounds and images shown to the spectator, is, by definition, physical and has “extension in a room”.

That can be considered as the “machine” behind, but what about the art-piece that is created as a flow (from the “machine”)?

What about the flow of images and sound?

I say  -   a real-time art-piece, exists without time and without space.

A real-time art-piece, has no connotations whatsoever, to the old traditional concepts of time and/or space.

A real time art-piece is it´s own time and space.

A real-time art-piece creates an own single and perfect true interpretation of its own world.

A perfect truth.

It creates, together with it´s context, a perfect world. A world completely on its own. Parallell to that world there exist an infinite number of other real-time systems.

Art or not art.

Me, as the writer and you as a reader, of this document, are in this way of thinking, in this very particular philosophy, two perfect real-time systems existing parallell to an infinite numbers of other real-time systems or worlds.

All of us more real than the old concept of reality or real world.

We are surpassing the concept of reality.

We are hyperreal.
